Phonics is the teaching programme for reading that is used in almost all schools throughout the UK. It starts with the idea that every letter makes a sound. Children get to know the letter sounds and how to blend them together to make simple words, such as tap. Gradually, more letters and sounds are added, a few at a time. Then letter teams are introduced, and so on, in a careful progression to build reading skills and confidence.
